Vecka Trettiofyra [Week 34]

[Apologies for the late posting. It's been a busy week.  -- The Editor]

Kära familj och vänner,

This week was interesting. It started out real big, and looked to be a great packed week, but then slowed down with the weather. It's astounding how much the weather affects the people out here. If it's cloudy, you can tell because the people won't be out as much. They're almost like a thermometer, but I guess that's probably how it is the world over. No one wants to stand outside in 8C rain with a wind and talk. That's a lot of what the weather was this week.

This week, we taught this man who was excommunicated and it was really fun. He's trying to get his life back 100% on track again, and we're helping him out with it. We helped one of our members paint her entry-way, and had a great member-present lesson with a fairly new investigator. Things went pretty great, but it doesn't look like we'll be meeting her much more. We went and talked, then found out that she wasn't keeping commitments, but the family is still curious.

Wednesday night we got invited to dinner with our investigator who has a baptismal date, and he chose 4 Krogar vid sjön. It's one of the nicest restaurants in town, and had quite good food. It was a little expensive for normal missionaries, but it's a good thing we've got lots of plastic bottles to "pant" (trade in recycling for 1-2 kronor per bottle). It was a really fun night, and it's surprising how much he, Elder DeMordaunt, and I relate to each other. We've got a solid friendship built up, and he's still really positive. We had a faith-check with him on Thursday, and the only thing he was unsure about was Joseph Smith being a prophet, so we watched the Restoration, and he said he believes now. He's really positive, just working on his own hurdles, and will be there soon.

Thursday we had district meeting, so things were busy. Just like most weeks we had appointments from 4:30-9:30 all in a row. For lunch that day we had American pizza, and our Finnish Elder found out that he can't handle that much grease. He thought we tried to poison him for a while. Thursday was a great day, and this week looks like fun. Thursday this week is called Valborgsmässoafton. It's the night before summer starts. They usually have a big party, then go down to some big place and have a huge bonfire with all the old dead stuff. It's pretty cool. The next day is Valborgsmässodagen, the official beginning of summer here. It's pretty cool! Summer is coming! I can't believe how fast winter went.

We got invited to play chess with Janos, the guy with a baptismal date, this past Friday, and it was way fun. On the way there we got caught in a party awarding our local hockey team with their national champion trophy. The Lakers won!!!!! A member warned us that it was going on, and invited us, then we stopped there on our way to the church, and it was really cool. Big party filling our town square, with a live band playing, "All the Small Things." Chess was also really fun. I'm getting better, but am still in a 12 game losing streak.

Today we got out to see an old Castle ruin site here, and it got me thinking of a trip our family took to Mexico, where we saw some other ruins at Tulum, and there was something in common with both of these, and all the ruins I've seen. The foundations are still there. You can see the foundations of all the buildings that once were there, but have long since gone away. So what foundation are we building on? What do we have that will last long after our time, and be the thing that defines where we stood? Helaman 5:12 tells us where our foundation should be built. If we build upon Christ, people won't have to ask where we stand. In our days we will be glorious strong fortifications, and after our days, they will still know where we stood, and the blessings that came from our foundation.

Mvh,
